12: RPG with well-supported campaigns (RPG a Day 2024)

#RPGaDay2024

Some games, like Call of Cthulhu and D&D, have many published campaigns. I can see naming games like these as supporting campaigns. However, this prompt asks me something different. What games are made to support campaign play?

The game played (and watched) the most on the channel is Forbidden Lands by Free League. It is a sandbox survival game. The characters are “not heroes sent on missions dictated by others – instead, you are raiders and rogues bent on making your mark on a cursed world.”

The game mechanically supports hex crawling and gives the GM the tools to create endless places for the characters to discover as they explore. The encounter tables for travel are deep and connected. A GM can start a campaign of Forbidden Lands with a hex map, players, and a handful of randomly created adventure sites. A narrative about the characters and the world will emerge and can be carried across dozens of gaming sessions.

The game gives me the tools to run and play a campaign.
