I buy my RPGs from several channels. I buy games on Drivethru RPG via Kickstarter directly from the creators, on Amazon, and from publishers like Exalted Funeral. Answering this question was more complicated than it should be. As best I can surmise, Outgunned from Two Little Mice was my first purchase this year.
Outgunned is my latest obsession. Its mechanics are player-facing and streamlined, supporting the genre in ways I wish all RPGs would.
Outgunned is a cinematic action RPG inspired by the classics of the action and heist genre, from Die Hard to True Lies, passing through James Bond, Lethal Weapon, Kingsman, Ocean’s Eleven, Hot Fuzz, and the latest John Wick. In Outgunned, Players take on the role of action Heroes facing terrible odds. They will be constantly surrounded by enemies while trying to carry out their mission, be it robbing a casino or saving the day.
Your enemies are abstracted like minions in other games. The dice system is a Yahtzee-like endeavor with an exciting push-your-luck spin. Rolling is tense, which amplifies the excitement. I usually shy away from games with a significant combat component. The combat in this game fits the genre and is easy – it allows the table the room to focus on the fiction of the action. The two following actions share the same rules and resolution mechanics:
“I leap off the building, swing on the street fair banner, and land in the convertible as it races past.”
“I pick up the beer bottle and break it on his head while I punch him with my other hand.”
So far, I’ve run it twice online (not streamed) to work through the rules and once in person. Making characters takes twenty minutes, and the game is easy to teach as you play. I will bring the game to the channel in September!
Thanks for joining in the event! We should swing on some fair banners into moving cars, soon!
I haven’t had a chance to get it to the table yet but Outgunned seems pretty great
